My students are brilliant, voracious readers who learned to be this way in our middle school reading classes. When I get my hands on new books, they have epic rock paper scissors competitions to see who gets to read them first.
Our school library is geared towards younger readers so the books in my classroom library are their literary lifeline. Because most of the students come from struggling families, books are a luxury few of them can afford. Our city library is a great resource, but the average wait for a new popular title is 6 months. We need a collection of high interest books.
My students rush into class Monday morning to tell everyone what they read over the weekend. They are eager to share recommendations with their classmates. The most unlikely friendships have been forged over a shared book. Our class discussions are full of references to books. Out of my 10 years as a reading teacher, I have never encountered students who LOVED books so much.
