My students are in a grade 3-5 classroom. They are special education students with emotional difficulties. These students have difficulty focusing and engaging on lessons that are primarily paper and pencil. They can only focus for short periods of sit down learning time. My students prefer to move around and often stand up while they do their work. Providing them with a math center with hands-on activities would allow them to focus and motivate them to learn. Whenever they are engaged in activities that require them to use their hands, their focus increases and they enjoy learning. Our school is in a high poverty area and the school system only provides funds for basic supplies. My students need engaging, hands-on activities as a way to motivate and challenge them. My students also need to engage with their peers in order to build relationships that are necessary to their emotional growth.
