DNA is a relatively new tool used in solving crimes. The Forensic Science class I teach already is so popular that we have added a second semester of Forensic Science to learn advanced topics and techniques, which will focus on DNA Analysis. This class attracts a wide variety of students. Many of these students are interested in a career in law enforcement, and are highly motivated to learn Forensic Science. Because they are learning an application of science that really interests them, my Forensic Science classes also encourage them to pursue science as a major in a two-year or four-year college. Most of my students are in 11th or 12th grade, since successful completion of Biology is a prerequisite. Our school is low income and has a high percentage of at risk students, and increasing numbers of minority students are taking upper level science electives like Forensic Science.
