Choice is powerful! Giving my students the chance to choose where they sit and on what they sit on, will give them ownership of their classroom. I want my students to fill empowered to complete their work in a spot that helps them be the most productive. Disruptions and distractions are also kept to a minimum when choice is involved. We all have that "favorite" spot in our home and I hope to create an environment in my classroom that mimics that as well.
My students come for reading instruction at the "teacher table" every single day! This is where the "meat" of our instruction happens. I chose the "wobble stools" in hopes that my students can have more comfortable seating at the teacher table while actively collaborating and learning. I believe that wobble stools will make this learning time a special time that they look forward to each day! I chose the exercise balls as a tool and seating option for my students to use in place of regular chairs at their work tables. I firmly believe that EVERY child can learn, and they should be able to do so in a comfortable, warm, welcoming, environment that gives them the chance to take charge of their own learning.
I have been privileged to witness the impact of choice and flexible seating in the classroom for several years. It no doubt makes a difference in helping the kids realize that it's actually THEIR classroom THEIR learning space!
