Our school has put a lot of emphasis on physical education and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. We have fought to keep physical education in our schools and promote the 150 minutes of physical education per week that is recommended by NASPE (National Association of Sport and Physical Education). Our students do not all have the opportunity to be involved in extra-curricular activities outside of the school day, so we find it important to ensure that they receive the maximum amount of physical activity during the school day. We cannot control the amount of physical activity they receive at home, but we can control the amount of physical activity we expose them to during the school day. The pedometers are something they can use both in and outside of school and something they can use to promote "family time" in the home. "Hey Mom! Let's go for a walk instead of watching T.V. I want to count my steps." It can even become a healthy competition between students.
