My students are 6th and 7th grader regular education students who attend a large, poor performing, urban middle school. In looking at the number of students who were being retained and those who barely passed their grade, the idea of creating a pilot program to address the unique needs of these students was developed. Research shows that retaining students at the middle school level does not make a difference. Conversely, research shows that students that are socially promoted are more likely to drop out of high school. We wanted to construct an intervention program for these students in an effort to have them experience success in school and graduate from high school. A differentiated, project based curriculum was developed to provide students with an integrated curriculum that was more hands on and interactive than the subject specific curriculum used in the regular classrooms. In addition, this pilot allows us to address the unique, and often complex needs of these students
