My students are responsible for mastering the same standards as their nondisabled peers. Students with autism often experience sensory overload. The sights and sounds of a classroom can be overwhelming and disrupt the learning process. Hearing others talking, an air conditioner, or even the sound of a pencil scratching on paper can be a huge distraction. With these earphones, my students with autism and ADHD will be better able to focus on their work, without the distraction caused by everyday noises. The jellyfish fidget will provide calming sensory input and an opportunity for fine motor development. It will also increase interest in learning about ocean animals and conservation.
Many times the successes of my students depends on having learning materials that meet their needs. Due to difficulties reading grade-level texts, they often need books that are written at a lower grade level in order to access the information they are required to learn. They can learn the information, but it MUST be presented in a way they can comprehend. The books I have requested include Ocean Counting, ABC Oceans, and National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of the Ocean. These books will help them to increase their math and literacy skills while helping them understand the concepts of environmental science and conservation.
Your donation will help provide students with disabilities the materials they need to be successful in the classroom.
