My students participate in a class economy where they earn classroom dollars as a positive reinforcement. They earn classroom bucks for completing their classroom jobs, participating in good behavior, and other daily and weekly tasks. The money earned is then used to go shopping in our class store where they can purchase various prizes at different costs. They have to figure out how much the items cost together and then they have to calculate the difference when paying.
Our prize chest is a real treasure as it bring real world economics into our students' lives. These prizes not only motivate students to do their best, but also teaches them about economics as they have to manage their classroom money through spending and saving. This small treasure chest provides a wealth of experiences and hands-on learning for my 8-9 year old students.
