Representation matters! The books I chose represent many different races, cultures, and types of families - much like the students I teach.
Every child deserves to see themselves in the books we read. By growing my diverse classroom library, I am teaching my students the power of being seen and heard.
Additionally, adding more diverse books in kindergarten will increase the exposure of my students to different cultures and races. It will initiate deep discussions and raise questions. Kindergarten kids are not too young for those discussions. We owe them that.
