Our school is in the inner city of Phoenix, Arizona. The majority of the students at the school are eligible for the free lunch program, and face many common challenges of this kind of area. Poverty, gangs, substandard housing and lack of resources make reaching their potential more difficult. Although our families are very supportive and value education, they of do not have the resources to provide the opportunities that these students need to flourish academically. My classroom is made of of students that are second language learners. Many of their parents are monolingual Spanish speakers. This means their English language development is going to happen primarily in the school setting. Exposing them to rich literature that they can relate to opens up understanding, as well as gives a springboard to talk about some issues that are central to building the perseverance that these students need to be successful.
