My students are in a state of transition. They have left the comfort of a small elementary school with one teacher a day to join students from many different schools.
Middle school is not an easy time for students. So much is changing. My students are trying to negotiate seven different classes, personal relationships and balancing what they want to do versus what they have to do. Each student is trying to figure out who they are and their place in the world.
The backgrounds of my students vary from middle class to living in poverty, success in math to constant struggle, curious to learn to apathetic. My students are ethnically diverse. None of this matters. What matters is that there is belief. Belief that they can succeed. Belief that all of them should be given the opportunity to reach their full potential. Belief that what they are being asked to learn has meaning. Belief in themselves.
