My students are from one of the poorest counties in North Carolina. Ninety-five percent of them receive free or reduced lunch. Many of them come to school on the first day without even the basic supplies they need for school, such as notebooks and pencils. They are also a fantastic group of fourth graders who get very excited about improving their math, reading and writing skills, so that they can be successful in the 21st century.
