My library is in a k-6 elementary,Title I school with a high English language learner population. 85% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch, which implies limited access to digital devices and internet outside of school.
In my library we celebrate the diversity of our students; including heritage cultures near home, Alaska Native, and those far away, Hmong from southeast Asia and Samoan from the Pacific.
Like all libraries today, the digital age has impacted the materials and programs I provide, as well as the needs and interests of the students. My library is keeping reading and books alive as one form of literacy in this new era by being responsive to student requests for content. Most academic material is online, but my students still love good recreational reading in print.
