My students come from many countries, they speak various languages and they have a multitude of educational backgrounds. However, they all have a common thread: the desire to speak English and to fit in as an American student. I strive everyday to help them acquire English and to become acquainted with the American way of life, while still honoring all of the native cultures each brings to the classroom. Many of my students are low learners in their native language because many of them may not have had the opportunity to go to school in their native country. As a result, I must fill in the gaps to help them be successful on rigorous state standards. Other students come to me proficient and distinguished in content areas, but just need support in language skills. I strive for the ESOL classroom to not only be an educational setting, but an environment they can come and feel comfortable to be themselves.
