Our downtown public school is just steps from universities and famous businesses. Students come from many different kinds of families. Some come from wealthy homes, but others have already known the uncertainty of homelessness. About 61% of our students are eligible for free and reduced price lunch. The student population is 89% African-American, and 49% of our students are boys. Eighty-seven percent of families in our attendance zone live in rental housing within a few blocks of school. Our recent campaign to convert Centennial from a traditional elementary school to a charter school enrolling students in up to 8th grade has increased our enrollment. There is not one shy child at our school. Each one has a story to tell, and will happily tell it in as many different ways as there are people to listen. They are incredibly creative: artists and singers and dancers and storytellers. We are a high-energy bunch; kids are always on the move to the next activity.
