My students are dreamers. They are curious, intelligent, creative, dedicated, and innocent but limited in English. Learning concepts require thoughtful lesson plans, visual models, hands-on experiences, and plenty of time to develop and discuss ideas. They enjoy diving into the day because they know learning is powerful. They come from a high level of poverty and need. Most of my students care for siblings after school, while their parents work 2 to 3 jobs. They come to school worrying about adult problems. Our school works hard to offer services for all students. For example, we have a weekend food program and after school clubs which include homework, math, soccer, yoga, tennis, and swimming so that kids have an opportunity to participate in a range of academics and athletics. In addition, we partner with an organization which promotes a healthy and active lifestyle through fitness. Each student who runs 25 miles earns a pair of Nike shoes. My entire class has earned their shoes.
