Student council, ten 5th and 6th graders, were voted in at the beginning of the school year by their peers. Student council meets 1 day a week. In that day, students run the Caught Being Good Store. This school store reinforces positive behavior, reading, math and test taking skills through tickets. Items in the CBG store are school supplies, books and donated items from the community (reuse). Student council is also responsible for the school, of 300+ students, recycling program. Recycling is hugely emphasized living on an isolated rural island. Taking care of the aina (land) is a common topic within classrooms, dinner tables and community meetings. Strong emphasis on self-sustainability teaches children, at an early age, resources are limited. Food, water, and gasoline are weekly imported. From that fact students can learn, practice and teach others the importance of reuse and recycling the items that shipped to us with as much frequency as possible.
