I once heard that sometimes the students that need the most love act out in the most unloving of ways. When I heard this, I immediately thought about the students that my school serves. 100%of the students at my school receive free lunch and within the last few years my school has experienced a shift in school culture and community and parental involvement. Despite the shifts, 100% of the teachers have made it their mission to provide a quality education as a means to build a pathway out of poverty for the students we serve. With only 6 years behind them the students that I serve enter into the classroom with a variation of academic skills, communication abilities, and access to everyday tools and interactions that their more affluent peers have. Despite the variation, one common theme amongst my students is that when introduced to a reading goal and the steps that we are going to take to ensure their reading success, their once unsure, unexcited feelings towards reading were transformed.
