The majority of my students are ranked in the lowest quartile according to state assessments. Coming from low income households, many of the students have not been exposed to concepts of financial literacy. Of course they all have cell phones and play video games, but my students find difficulty in researching, writing, and presenting a finished document to their peers. They are a products of their environment, and are struggling to gain the necessary skills to be successful in a world in which technology has become more a rule for success than a choice.
My students need more exposure and direction to combine the latest technology and their understanding of math to solve real world problems on a macro and micro level.
The use of technology will help them see the value of the learning math and computer skills to them personally, and hopefully inspire them to make better choices due to increased self esteem from the practical and academic skills they master through this exercise.
