My students are pre-adolescents in every sense of the word. They can be charming, engaging, brilliant, immature, profound, whiny, and uplifting in the course of one class. Many have rough home lives and don't realize there is a way out. They need education and literacy to define their world and realize the choices they have. They can go to good high schools and colleges if they work hard. My students are engaging entertainers. They can spin good yearns with enough detail to make me swear I was there. They need role models and people to aspire to. They need these books. My school is an up-and-coming middle school in Maryland. Surrounded by depressed areas, the school--led by a persistent, eloquent, and caring principal--has refused to be dragged down. Quite the opposite, we are in the midst of an educational renaissance. We have infused the curriculum with technology and staffed the faculty with caring, compassionate teachers who want their students to soar.

About my class
