Now imagine that you are a student with Autism. The social deficits of students with Autism affect their ability to develop and maintain friendships and often result in low self esteem and poor educational performance. I work with a remarkable set of diverse individuals who have Autism. Together, we discuss the hidden social curriculum and learn ways to increase perspective taking skills, emotional regulation and the basic fundamentals of a conversation. My students come from rural South Georgia and the Department of Education has identified our school as a low-income secondary school. As a related service, Speech Therapy, receives little funding for treatment materials.
