I teach approximately 90 ELL students in bilingual Biology and Chemistry classes in one of the largest high schools in Connecticut, which is also in a high poverty area. There are over 40 different languages spoken in our extremely diverse school and all students are required to pass Biology and Chemistry to graduate.
Students are very eager to learn science and to improve their academic and communicative language skills, and they come to class excited to experiment and investigate. I teach using a combination of visuals, models, hands-on materials, project-based learning, and my own materials that I have adapted to make them more accessible to my students.
