My school is an International school in inner city Seattle. Our school has three language immersion programs, Spanish Immersion, Mandarin Immersion, and English Immersion. I teach second grade literacy in the morning, and third grade literacy in the afternoon. The students in my class receive English literacy instruction with me for half of their day, and for the other half of their day, they either receive Mandarin, Spanish, or English instruction. Many students at our school speak a different language at home. Most of them speak Spanish, while others speak Vietnamese, Mandarin, and Somali. The students come from homes rich in cultural and linguistic diversity. Their language and cultural perspectives offer an asset to our school and classroom community. Our school is also a Title 1 school and most students receive free and reduced lunch. Many of our families come from low-socio economic backgrounds, yet our students attend school eager to learn everyday.
