Our students are from many cultures and backgrounds. Most have never tinkered with a machine or a science project outside of school. Many are resigned to a world of Internet media and electronic entertainment. So when they come to our robotics class we see a noticeable change in how they interact with each other and their shop environment. Some start off learning to tighten a bolt or turn a screw properly. Soon they are into the project with some gentle guidance from the teacher and our generous parent volunteer mentors. Students learn to take mechanical things apart and put them back together. This helps prepare them for an intense "build" season (approx. 6 weeks in winter) at which time they must work as an efficient team to completely design and construct a robot that is fully functional in a competition against other high school robotic teams.
