My students all come from different cultures and countries. I have a total of 25 students whom I see in a small group setting. These students range from kindergarten-5th grade all ranging in skill level.
The majority of them are still learning letter names and letter sounds, including my 5th graders. 10% of them don't speak or understand English AT ALL and neither do their parents. 30% of them speak English but can't read or write in English and the other 60% can speak and understand English and write some, but need extra vocabulary and writing assistance.
The district I teach in is a very low socio-economic district where these families would love to be able to afford private tutors and translators to help with the language barrier but simply can't afford it.
All of my students are hard workers and very well behaved and it breaks my heart to see the defeat and struggle in their eyes not because they're not smart, but because they don't understand our language.
