Kindergarten is an option, not a requirement, in my state. Some of my children come to me in fist grade without ever being exposed to books, writing and/or pre-reading skills. Our school is fortunate to house refugees from other countries. Many families in my region do not have the funds to expose their children to critical pre-reading skills before they enroll in school. Our students are in a Title One school where it is ninety-six percent free or reduced price breakfast and lunch. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, less than twelve percent receive a bachelor's degree in the county where I teach. Students' inability to read is a huge contributor to that statistic. Parents want to give their children what they need to gain the opportunities that proficient reading allows but simply cannot afford it. I want to give my students the electronic books and educational games that they need to become proficient readers, but I am unable to do so without your assistance.
