80% of my school’s population lives in poverty. The students I teach are very diverse, with 40% of the families in my school speaking a language other than English at home. I give small group instruction to students each day and they tend to be the students who have the least amount of support at home. Many of these kids have changed schools several times in their short school lives. They have a hard time getting their homework done or getting academic support from their families. Students also do not have as much technology at home and they are expected to know how to use computers and have word processing skills for the standardized tests that are now taken starting in Grade 3.
