I am so excited to be getting my classroom ready for my first year of teaching this fall, as an elementary school teacher at Andrew Jackson School, a great public school in my south Philadelphia neighborhood.
It took me a long road to get here. I'm a career changer--I spent fifteen years as a community organizer. But I will bring what I have learned, including my knowledge of Spanish, to my classroom.
In my teacher training at the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education and in the substitute teaching I have done this spring at Independence Charter School, one of the most useful teaching tools I have found is a document camera. It lets students quickly and easily share their work: put a writing journal or a math problem solving notebook under the doc cam and the page is instantly up on the wall, magnified, so students can learn from each other's thinking.
