My students are faced with making huge gains in their math skills in order to be on-grade level mathematician. They need to be engaged and involved in their learning in such away it can't help but interest with them.
My students are the bravest people I know. My students know more about life at the age of 10 than I did at 18. They face difficult circumstances and challenges I can only imagine. Yet, every morning they wake up, get themselves ready, walk themselves to school, and have a seat in my classroom ready to learn.
I teach in a Title 1 school with a 99% Free & Reduced Lunch Population. The majority of my students are significantly behind in reading. Many of my students have never been read to at home, do not own books, and do not make trips to the library. Many of their parents didn't finish school themselves. The new math strategies are foreign to parents.
