We love these magazines! Not only will students receive their very own color copy, but the main story featured in the text is always a relevant, current event that is interesting to students. We will use the Scholastic Readers during our whole class reading time to practice reading skills and fifth grade standards with nonfiction text. Because the weekly magazine features a paired story, they will be able to take the consumable reader home to enjoy reading and sharing with their family. This increases the home to literacy connection and models literacy with their younger siblings.
I want my students to understand current events so that when they are preparing to vote and become active citizens, they have developed habits of critical reading and thinking.
We will also use this resource during our writing block because it features an opinion section, with a current debate, which is also a fifth-grade writing standard.
