My students are often mislabeled and criticized for circumstances beyond their control. I've been asked countless times, "how do you work there? Those kids are criminals" and my response is always that, "MY kids aren't--they need the best teachers who won't give up on them when everyone else has thrown in the towel."
Because of the huge turnover rate of teachers and administration, the student body has difficulty trusting and investing in teachers who are "probably going to be gone in three months." They deal with an impoverished and violent community where just getting to school is challenging. I would like to present them with relevant information that can help improve their view of education and recognize the opportunities that are available to all of them.
