My students love our STEAM class. In class, they are challenged to use the 4 Cs of creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication to build structures that meet certain outcomes. For example. using only sticks, paper and tape, students are asked to build the tallest freestanding structure they can. During Hispanic Heritage month, students studied various famous landmarks and areas in the Hispanic countries and built representations inspired by those.
My students know that they are learning skills to help them be successful now and into the future. The activities we do help the students observe, think and understand engineering concepts. They also allow students to practice skills in both academic areas such as math and science, and interpersonal skills such as cooperation, collaboration, and communication.
By providing enough materials for all students to have access during their builds, students will be able to focus on their design goals without wasting any of their fifty minute block of time in class.
My students love coming to STEAM and I love helping them use their 4 Cs to build their confidence and mindset to the tune of "You can do it!"
