My students live in south Atlanta in poverty stricken and crime ridden neighborhoods. Most of my students are being raised by single mothers with multiple children. All of my student receive free and reduced lunch. For the majority of my students, breakfast and lunch at school are the two assured meals they will have each day. While their home lives provide many challenges, my school has the highest attendance rate in our district. My students are at school and ready to learn; however, all the student I serve as a Reading Early Intervention Program teacher for students that are at least one grade level behind the actual classroom he/she is sitting in. When I walk in the classroom to service my students theirs eyes light up and they quickly move to the table where we work and get started. In this smaller setting, the students are able to get more direct reading instruction at his or her individual ability level.
