I'm a English Language Arts teacher in a small town. I introduced project based learning in 2013, and it's become a trademark of our school. Students can't wait to get into my 8th grade ELA class, so they can participate.
We studied the Holocaust and created a mini Holocaust museum, as well as composed exhibits related to heroes, authors, courageous people and international writers. The exhibits are hosted at our local community college. The literacy exhibit are presented to the students in grades 3-8, parents and the community.
This year my plans are to embark on a yearlong literary study related to the theme: We the People. By reading multicultural literature and studying primary source documents, students increase their vocabulary and reading scores and learn to appreciate other cultures - and link it to real artifacts. Students always enjoy presenting at the exhibits and forget it required them to read.
