My students are an incredible mix of 7th and 8th graders from different genders, ethnicities, and economic backgrounds. None had ever experienced the engineering and design process before, and they were hesitant to work in teams, communicate solutions, and work hard on redesigns until success was achieved.
Using problem-based learning projects has pulled them together and helped them achieve success both individually and as a member of a team. Most of my students have found a strength in the engineering and design process that they did not know they possessed! I can see their precision and confidence growing each day, and it has been incredibly rewarding for them as well as me.
