For many students who haven’t had opportunities to travel beyond their hometown or even those who have never been in an airplane, they are limited by experiences. Reading opens doors for all students, especially those with limited or few experiences.
Having an up-to-date classroom library filled with high interest books from various genres will provide my students with opportunities to engage the world in a more meaningful way. Not only will the books be used for read-alouds where the students will be able to hear modeled fluent reading, the books will also be used for students daily independent reading, book clubs, and literature circles. Lastly, the books will also be used to promote the school's accelerated reader program, whereby students read books and take comprehension quizzes to earn prizes and rewards.
Again, my ultimate goal is to spark a love of reading in my students. I just want them to read and enjoy doing it! Having an up-to-date classroom library will help bridge some of the reading deficits faced by my students and ultimately aid in closing the achievement gap.
