One aspect of STEM learning is to have the opportunity to model and research what happens in the real world. A fly becomes trapped in a web - why? How does the web trap the spider? How could we build a model to show how this happens? Students will use the Chromebooks to research real world phenomena prior to creating a model, a science experiment or a physics illustration. Students building a spaghetti/marshmallow tower can research actual buildings to help them create their standing tower. Working with a partner enables my students to share the excitement of their research.
While making a scientific model is something we do often, adding the research to show why our models are correct and illustrate a real-world phenomena deepens my students' understanding of the real world. Why do spacesuits work? Will we be able to colonize Mars? How could we create a habitat to enable humans to live and work on Mars? are some of the questions my students are interested in.
