Our school has 63% free and reduced lunch and we are 33% Hispanic, 33% African American and 33% other. The school community is very stressful as the will to succeed academically and socially has many obstacles. Parental support with various programs is difficult as many families are single parent families and the adult at home is struggling to make ends meet. Parents are working multiple jobs, and time to spend with their children is limited. Without the support from home, the staff at school has stepped up to embrace the students and offer them as many opportunities as possible to participate in extracurricular activities. The after school programs give the students the opportunity to be involved in their community in a positive way.
