I am a 7th grade language arts teacher who uses novels to move my students toward life-long reading. For some of them, this is their first time reading a chapter book from cover to cover, and to see the joy on their faces as they begin to engage with the characters is indescribable. I began to think that in order to truly dig into the novels we read, each student would need to have their own book. I mean to OWN it...to be able to underline phrases, mark up their favorite passages and TAKE IT HOME WITH THEM! They could even read ahead! (Sigh) I believe that education is the only true equalizer and that books in the hands of children become power.
