It is my goal to create a safe learning environment for my students, which allows them to be engaged, curious, and excited to come to school. Last year, I began implementing flexible seating options in my classroom. While we only had bean bag chairs and pillows, my students looked forward to their chance to get away from their desks and choose how they wanted to complete their work.
At the end of the year, I asked my students to take a survey and explain their favorite parts about second grade. Over half of my class mentioned that they liked being able to choose where they wanted to sit to do their centers. When asked to provide a suggestion for the following year, many students suggested that I should purchase additional comfortable seating options. They were extremely excited when we discussed alternative seating options like yoga balls, wobble stools, balance discs, yoga mats, a new carpet and new pillows. I took these suggestions seriously and have already replaced desks with several tables and small work areas.
I would love to replace the chairs with seats that will allow the students to collaborate and expand their creativity. These seating options will also allow students to burn more calories, improve their core strength and posture, increase oxygen to the brain and become more motivated and engaged. The days of sitting in uncomfortable desks is over. Goodbye, desks and chairs! Hello, comfort, choice, health, and fun!
