Flexible seating is relatively new in the education world. I have heard more and more about it in the past year. Research has shown that students have an increase in engagement, grades, and participation when they are given comfortable alternatives to desks and chairs.
Research has also shown that allowing students to move around the room increases collaboration, a skill crucial in their social-emotional development. I introduced flexible seating last year, using yoga mats and allowing students to bring their own blanket to the classroom. Students jumped at the opportunity to lay on the floor while reading, or sit with peers in a circle to discuss the latest assignment. I witnessed the relationships being built while also learning from each other.
This project will give more options for students to be comfortable while learning.
