My students need materials that will allow them to actually PLAY at recess. They need sport equipment so they can be active and engaged during their allotted break time. The GRADE 5 RECESS PACK includes enough balls, bases, and other sporting equipment that my class of 25 will all be able to use and share at once.
Recently, I received an educational grant to visit and collaborate with teachers in Finland - one of the nations with the top performing schools and education systems. These teachers and administrators emphasized the importance of active play among even the older children. They also encourage students to play OUTSIDE. I want my students to have choice in their recess games, and to have the equipment necessary to play group games, indoor and especially outside. The recess games book (100+ Fun Ideas for Playground Games) will help me facilitate these larger group activities.
Another takeaway from my experience in Finland was the importance of brain breaks. Students need a chance to "recharge" their brains in between lessons. The additional equipment I have requested (inflatable exercise balls, dry-erase station boards, stability pads, and pilates cards) will be used during these mini-recesses throughout the day. These materials will allow students to complete various exercises within the classroom. These mini-recesses will be teacher guided with help from the cards and stations, and will vary daily.
The speaker will allow me to play music during the mini-breaks as well as any full recesses that have to be held indoors due to inclement weather. Many of my students are very motivated by all things music and dance related. Playing music on the speaker will put everyone in the mood to get up, be active, and to use the break to its utmost potential!
