Foreign wars, global poverty, or the upcoming U.S presidential election are just some of the topics my students want to learn about in my 7th-grade Social Studies Class. Using Kindle Fires to access current events on a weekly basis will really allow my students to follow their passion, explore different cultures, and engage in meaningful class discussions. Since my student population is so ethnically diverse, access to current events sites, like NewsELA, can really cater to the students' cultural awareness and their academic success.
In short, funding Kindle Fires for my classroom will allow my students to grow academically by building vital literacy skills while engaging in meaningful Social Studies content through reading current events. I no longer want to be the one selecting the articles they read. Instead, I want my students to feel empowered, be engaged, and willing to discuss their topics and articles with their peers. I truly love to see my students taking ownership for their academic success!
