Playing a string instrument is a very intrinsic experience, but this feeling can only be done with freedom of movement. The instrument must become an extension of the instrument and the way you hold an instrument can not interfere with music. When we hold our instrument to play it and make music, our body must have the freedom to move with the music and along the strings. As such, having shoulder rests will secure the violin or viola on the student's body so that they can experience this freedom.
When we are free to move with our instrument, it becomes our perfectly balanced dance partner instead of a tool. --moving in time with us, responding to our calculated, careful movements with sweet sounds. We build a relationship with it over time; therefore, develop an attachment to the instrument. If even one child develops such an attachment, that experience will stay with them for a lifetime.
