One aspect of our high school curriculum that has come to mean so much to both the students and myself is their independent reading assignments. So much content that students read comes in blips and captions through social media, clickbait headlines, and TikTok videos. Giving students the experience of getting into a text, one that excites them, one that challenges them, one that they see themselves in gives a greater sense of validation than any quick clickable content out there.
Students come to love authors like Angie Thomas, Jason Reynolds, Taheri Mafi, Veronica Roth, Ellen Hopkins, and so many other voices when they are exposed to them. These authors give students a chance to escape into fictional worlds that may sometimes look just like theirs or others that look very different and their eyes are opened to so much more than their hometown viewpoint.
Helping to fund this project will continue to allow me to keep my classroom library relevant, intriguing, and truly validating to the student experience that they need to read and learn exist not only in their own lives but of so many around them.
