In the astronomy unit, every year I take students to the Hayden Planetarium in the American Museum of Natural History in order to see the stars that are otherwise seldom seen in New York City. Although this is always a memorable experience for them and for myself, the students often come out more curious than they previously were coming into the museum. I would like to get a telescope in order to fulfill their curiosity by getting students to actually make observations of the night sky. I would be able to get students to observe the sky right from the outside of the building with permission of the students' parents and the principal of my school. This could also be a community event where students can bring their parents who had otherwise never had the opportunity to look through a telescope either. The telescope could also help me start an astronomy club in school where we could go out and look at how the constellations change during the course of the year.
Using this telescope, students will be able to observe things such as other planets in the solar system, their moons, hundreds of stars that will be visible in the night sky and even up to four distant galaxies. I am hopeful that this kind of experience will get more students excited about science and even help some of them to pursue it in college. I am excited and grateful to have this kind of opportunity.
