I am a school social worker at a high school in an urban school district. My students are diverse with many of them coming from economically disadvantaged homes. A third of my students receive free or reduced lunch and they face various barriers to achieving academic success. They come from homes where food is scarce and where there is not enough money to pay for life's essentials such as clothing, utilities, and school supplies. Many have experienced trauma and have difficulty getting to school regularly. My students face and conquer academic, social, and emotional demands daily. They are learning academic, social, and coping skills to help them navigate through their lives.
