Kindergarten is an important time for students to create a strong foundation for reading. There are a variety of skills that are taught to students at this young age. The beginning steps start with letter recognition and the the ending steps consist of reading whole sentences. However, without the correct materials this task cannot be accomplished. That is why I am asking for an Easel, Pocket Chart, and a Beginning Leveled Library Set. The Easel and Pocket Chart can be used in a variety of ways to enhance my students learning. For instance the Morning Message, letter of the week, writing, handwriting, and many other lessons will need both materials in order to be successful. When students are this young, they need to visually see what is being taught, whether it be through writing, pictures, or often times both. These materials will provide students with the visual representation they need to build a foundation for reading. The Beginning Leveled Library Set is going to take the skills the students have learned, and take it to the next step! When it comes to reading, it is important that the books being used are at each student's particular skill level. These books will be used during our Guided Reading Block. During this time, I will have the opportunity to work with students, in a small group, and provide them with a reading instruction that is tailored to their level. The students will then take the books, that we read together, home and continue to practice. The more practice and repetition the better their reading will become.
