The use of headphones in my classroom is wide and varied. I use them for my blended learning format, meaning that while I'm working with a small group on specific writing techniques or skills, the other students are studying a Ted Talk or listening to an author's speech and taking notes on the professional writing advice found in those resources. We also use the headphones during testing windows for students with dyslexia or other learning needs that require them to hear audibly the question or reading passage in order to best show their learning. Without these tools, those students scores, as well as their classroom work, suffer for lack of understanding, which means they are not being represented for the wise and learning children that they are. Sometimes, headphones are even used to create a silent space for my young writers to focus on their work, freed from the distractions of the busy classroom around them. Having a working class set would enable all of my learners to access, understand, and ultimately apply their learning on a daily basis.
