My students love to make things and take them apart (especially the latter!) and don't have an outlet for this much of their day. They also get few chances to develop and use their spacial reasoning skills, something often neglected in school but highly useful in many real-world scenarios.
My principal suggested this idea after hearing about it at a professional development session: Why not have students use brain teasers/tavern puzzles/etc as their starting point of the day? Instead of coming in and quickly scratching out a simple math problem to start the day, students would use these puzzles to engage their brain and busy their hands while everyone gets settled. Successful solutions would be praised and students would keep track of how many puzzles they've completed throughout the year.
